Mana powers the Special Skills of both Heroes and enemies in Battle.  It is shown as the blue bar immediately under their health bar. Mana bars begin each fight empty (with some rare exceptions) and fill as the Player makes matches, or uses Mana Potions where possible.

For Heroes, the mana bar fills by matching tiles of the Hero's element. Twice more mana is gained when the tiles are 'ghosted' (when the troops launched do not hit an enemy).

Enemies – bosses, Elite Enemies, Titans, and defense teams in raids and Alliance War – gain mana either when hit by tiles, or a small amount "trickles" each turn. Standard rule-of-thumb is one tile's worth per hit, and half for idle waiting; however this apparently gets more complicated in large combos. Even more mana is gained when they are hit with their own element.

Mana Speed[]

There are 5 basic levels of Mana Speed, determining how many matched tiles it takes to fill the mana bar.  Ghosted tiles (tiles that hit no enemy) provide twice as much mana as those that hit; thus for Slow it would be 12 hits or 6 ghosts.

  • Very Slow:  13.5 tiles
  • Slow:  12 tiles
  • Average:  10 tiles
  • Fast:  8 tiles
  • Very Fast:  6.5 tiles

Later on, a few more complicated Speeds were added for some special Families. For now, see Category:Heroes by Mana Speed or the factsheet at forum below.

Mana Troops[]

There are 4* Troops that speed up Mana generation.  The most widespread Mana Troops start with +5% and increase by 2% at Level 5 and every sixth after that, so have important breakpoints in the leveling process:

  1.   Lvl 5:  Very Slow decreases from 14 (or 13,5) to 13 tiles
  2.  Lvl 11:  Very Fast decreases to an even 6 tiles
  3.   Lvl 17:  Slow decreases from 12 to 11 tiles
  4.  Lvl 23:  Average decreases from 10 to 9 tiles; Very Slow decreases from 13 to 12 tiles
  5.   Lvl 29:  Fast decreases from 8 to 7 tiles

Due to the nature of the match-3 gameplay, levels 11 and 23, where a lower number of moves is reached, are particularly impactful. (Source) The scarce Tower of Magic and Tower of Styx Troops give even bigger bonus but their values and breakpoints are different.

Beside Troops, Mana generation is further improved by Heroes' Talents, Costumes and some Family bonuses, which needs to be taken in account when calculating speed and number of tiles.

Special Skills That Affect Mana[]

Also some Special Skills affect mana generation and/or current mana levels.  Offensively they are the Mana Reducers, while defensively they are the Mana Raisers.  There are a few heroes that raise mana generation.  They are:

Mana Buffers
3* Heroes 4* Heroes 5* Heroes
Bauchan Brynhild Alberich
Friar Tuck (neighbors, Costumed all) Sir Lancelot Ariel
Boss Wolf
Khagan (neighbors, Costumed all)
Misandra
Sif
Odin

Red Hood also has a unique mana skill as her minions prevent their owners from losing mana to effects that normally would drain it. The minions of Inari add some mana to their owner each turn; when Grimble destroys an enemy minion all allies get a small amount of mana as well.
